Case study: Bipolar disorder education for GPs

Bipolar disorder education for GPs

Many people with depression caused by bipolar disorder are misdiagnosed in general practice and inappropriately treated for unipolar depression.

In fact, the average time from onset of bipolar disorder symptoms to accurate diagnosis is over ten years. Early diagnosis is important so that appropriate treatment can be initiated, which may result in more favourable outcomes.

On behalf of AstraZeneca we recently created a resource kit, which included a simple assessment tool, to help GPs identify patients who might have bipolar disorder so they can refer them for a rigorous psychiatric assessment.

This information pack was very well received by GPs – so much so a reprint was required within a couple of months. The assessment tool provided a simple, practical way of identifying patients who needed referral.
